And of course, this IS a Pathfinder campout— cue the rain. Had a couple of nice thunderstorms which flooded one of the 10 person tents. Fortunately the tent was empty at the time, so we didn’t have soggy bedding to deal with at least! Everyone seemed to have a great time, seeing old friends and making new ones. The food was great and the Coordinators and all who helped did a fantastic job to make this a successful weekend! We are always impressed a our teen Pathfinders step into stronger leadership roles, and seek out guidance to help them on their journey.

The SAIL TLTs (participants in the Teen Leadership Training program) joined some 50 other teens and their mentors at Bastrop State Park over the Valentines Day weekend to continue their training, fellowship together, and practice CPR. Our TLT’s learned about handling money for the club, church, and personally with some great advice and entertaining stories from the instructors. On Sunday a thorough hands-on CPR class was provided which was informative as well as fun for all. There was also March and Drill for those not in CPR class. The speaker for the event was the SAIL club’s home church pastor who used imaginative illustrations to make his points. For example, the TLTs were divided into three groups, each with a large cube puzzle to assemble in 5 minutes. No one could do it. It turned out that extra pieces had been added so it was actually impossible. The puzzle represents our lives and how impossible it seems to get it together on our own, especially when we may have brought extra pieces ourselves, such as friends who drag us down, or bad habit’s, etc. But the God who created us knows how to put the pieces of our lives together if we submit to Him and are willing to give up those extra pieces that don’t belong.

The SAILs took part in the Pathfinder Bible Experience event in Killeen over the weekend, joining a total of 19 teams from Central Texas North to test their knowledge of the book of Isaiah. One of our teams tied for third place, and both teams performed admirably and showcased how well they studied and worked together. After two and a half hours of quiz, the Pathfinders enjoyed several performances by other clubs. (The SAILs had taken part in the color guard flag ceremony, and leading the opening program). Then it was time for the results, but before announcing teh scores, they awarded the Diamond Club awards for teh 24-25 Pathfinder Year. The SAILs were excited to once again be recognized as a Diamond Elite Club, the highest level recognition in Texas. It is thanks to the dedication of the Pathfinders (and staff), and teh support of their families (and the church) that the SAIL Pathfinder Club continues to strive for excellence, experience new things, and have opportunities for outreach, exploration, and learning. When the event was finally over, we loaded up and drove back down to Sandy's for some well deserved ice cream.
The SAILs made bird feeders (seed trays) at the first meeting in February. As the final part of the Bird Honor, the SAILs will be monitoring what birds come to their feeders for a week, and we can compare birds from different areas of Central Texas, different neighborhoods, and perhaps based on different feed types. By setting out the feeders, the SAILs can attract local birds to their yards for closer observation, practice identification, monitor behavior, and perhaps learn the birds by their sounds as well.
This is the second woodworking project this year for teh SAILs, after making bat houses earlier in the year. The club members are becoming familiar with hand and power tools, their use, and safety protocols, as well as learning basic design and the critical importance of measuring twice, cutting once. While these may be simple projects, they provide opportunities to learn the skills and techniques that are as applicable to larger projects, and even some home maintenance and repair. We are so lucky to have a construction engineer on staff to guide the Pathfinders through these projects. |
