Bats Come to a SAIL Pathfinder Meeting

The Austin Bat Refuge visited the SAIL Pathfinder Club for our final meeting of October, and the final part of our work on the Bats honor. The SAILs were excited to welcome our guest - and the two Mexican Free-Tailed Bats that she brought with her. Through an interactive session, the SAILs learned all about the lives of bats, what they eat, how they hunt, and the many myths around bats. Bats are wonderful creatures, keeping pest insect populations under control and protecting our crops. By better understanding these flying mammals, the Pathfinders learned what they can do to help keep bats safe and protect their environment.

Of course the favorite part of the meeting was getting an up close look at the bat ambassadors, listening to them vocalize, and watch them eat their vitamin-and-mineral-dusted mealworms. For most of the Pathfinders, they found the bats to be cute, not the frightening creatures often portrayed in myth and media. To conclude the meeting, several Pathfinders read poems they had written about bats, sharing creatively their appreciation for our fuzzy flying friends.
Some SAIL Pathfinder Club Bat Poetry
Bats glide gently through the sky,
Silent wings as they fly by,
Eating pests, they help us all,
     Tiny dudes, brave and small.

Bats fly under moonlit skies,
     Catching bugs with watchful eyes,
Don't be scared, they mean no harm,
     Helping farms, with nature’s charm

Wings weaved in darkness
Stars shine over hunters at night
Freedom in wind's breeze

How lovely are bats
They are so cute and fuzzy
How lovely are bats
_________________________

The sun goes down,
They stir, emerge, and take flight
Winging through the night
__________________________

A little brown bat with wings so wide
Zoomed through the sky on a moonlight ride
It zipped and it dipped so fast so free
A tiny explorer of night’s mystery
Nighttime bats flying into the night
Going back to roost when they see the light
Swift and fast catching bugs in the air
Going around the world without care
_____________________________

Bats fly softly through the night
Catching bugs in midair flight
Helpful creatures, small and bright
Nature’s friends beneath moonlight
____________________________

bats flutter softly
midnight’s whispering keepers
drinking stars and echos
their wings hum ancient night songs
____________________________

They fly at night
To snare a treat
They hunt with sound
The bugs they eat
Then back at dawn
To roost and sleep
Their help to man
Just can’t be beat!

Bat Boxes and a Week of Prayer

Building Bat Boxes

The Oct 15 Wednesday night club meeting became a construction site with the building of two bat boxes. One of the staff prepared the kits ready to be assembled and brought his power tools to do the job. The Junior and Senior units each had a box to build as a team, each Pathfinder taking a turn using the staple/nail gun, then drilling in holes and screws.  Besides learning to measure accurately and handle power tools, they learned what makes a bat box inviting for bats to use (narrow slots with grooves to hang from, etc) and how to hang it where predators like hawks, raccoons, snakes and such will not have easy access to having a bat dinner.  The finished boxes look great and were a fun project! We will be hanging them later this year, and watching to see if we can attract some bats to the neighborhood.

Week of Prayer

The Pathfinders did an excellent job helping out during the regional church service at the end of the week of prayer. They showed great teamwork and respect throughout the event. They helped by handing out flyers to everyone, welcoming people at the door with friendly smiles, and assisting with collecting the tithes and offerings in an organized way. Their good behavior and willingness to serve made a positive impression on the congregation and showed their dedication and responsibility as Pathfinders. Even the speaker was impressed by how attentive the Pathfinders were. While we spend a lot of time in the outdoors, focused on nature and adventure, we are also called to service and mission as a core of the Pathfinder program.

SAIL Pathfinder Autumn Campout

The SAIL Muleshoe Bend Campout of October 10-12, 2025 began with a sundown worship, with stories read aloud by some of the Pathfinders.  After tents were set up we headed out on a night hike and spent some time to gaze at the night sky, accompanied by a loud chorus of crickets. Then it was off to bed. Some of the staff opted to sleep in the open air under the stars and bright spotlight of the moon.

Sabbath morning as the girls cooked breakfast, one of the  farm fresh eggs that was cracked open produced a double yolk which in turn produced Pathfinders cracking jokes about frying eyeballs!  After the boys did kitchen cleanup duty it was time for a morning hike punctuated by rest stops for bat and bird stories in keeping with our theme for the year.

Back at camp, church worship service started with lots of singing followed by several Bible story skits organized by the senior unit and ended with a mission story.  After lunch a TLT led out in teaching the Red Alert Honor and as the afternoon heat began to subside, we headed out on another hike by the lakeshore.  We saw Killdeer running along the water’s edge, Red-tailed hawks soaring on the breeze while two Egyptian geese kept a cautious distance on the water and flocks of egrets kept rising from the marshy areas. The most exciting find was a small checkered garter snake who tried its best to hide in the debris, but our determined and resourceful Pathfinders caught him, held, stroked and admired him before releasing him back to his home.  After some games and dinner, it was showtime with glow lights until everyone headed to bed.

Sunday morning the boys flipped beautifully browned pancakes complete with chocolate chips, then the senior unit was off to learn how to navigate with map and compass while the junior unit made plaster casts of animal and bird prints.  After a final sweep of the campsites to pick up trash it was time to go home.  Asked about favorite memories of the weekend, the double-yoked egg and the snake were favorites, and hiking merited mention as well.
Junior Unit Report

Last weekend, the SAILs returned to their usual first campout spot, Muleshoe Bend Park. When they arrived and stepped onto the grass, they were met with countless stickers. We sat down at a bench and began reading some stories for worship. After setting up the tents, some staff chose to sleep outside while others did not.

Saturday morning started with the girls cooking breakfast. We enjoyed fresh croissant egg sandwiches, and some even got a double yolked egg. After breakfast, the boys cleaned up, and we all went out for a hike, stopping every mile or so to hear stories about bats and birds.

After we returned to camp and took a quick water break, we found a shady spot and began worship. We sang songs, shared stories, performed skits, and had a great time. After lunch, the TLTs guided everyone through the Red Alert Honor. Later, we hiked near the lakeshore, where we spotted interesting animals and tracks, and even found a baby snake. Despite its attempts to escape, our Pathfinders caught it and safely released it. We ended the evening with games, dinner, and glow sticks before going to bed.

On Sunday morning, after breakfast, the Seniors learned how to navigate using maps and compasses while the Juniors explored the lakeshore to find and cast animal tracks. After taking down the tents and cleaning the campsite, it was time to head home. We all left with fun memories and new experiences.

Senior Unit Report

On October 10th, the SAIL Pathfinders headed out to Muleshoe Bend to have their first campout of the year. While the senior unit was missing some members, they still made worship fun with reading stories.

Saturday morning the girls were on breakfast duty and chose to actually switch Sunday and Saturday’s breakfasts, eating croissant egg sandwiches, also finding a double yolked egg! Shortly after one of the missing senior unit members re-joined the club on the campout.

During the day the club headed out on a hiking trail for a quick 3 miler, performing well on the hike and staying hydrated.  After the hike the club gathered under a tree to sing songs, and perform skits to teach the story of how Jesus rose Lazarus from the dead. After the boys cooked some good spaghetti for lunch, the TLTs helped guide the club through the Red Alert Honor, learning what to do in emergency situations. Afterwards we hiked near the shore, discovering beheaded fish, baby snakes and even wild trucks stuck in the mud. At night the Pathfinders enjoyed games organized by one of the staff, had dinner, and played with cool glow sticks.

Sunday morning the boys cooked pancakes, seniors learned how to navigate and properly use compasses and the juniors cast animal tracks that were along the shore. After this the club packed up tents got things ready and made our way home.
