The SAILs made bird feeders (seed trays) at the first meeting in February. As the final part of the Bird Honor, the SAILs will be monitoring what birds come to their feeders for a week, and we can compare birds from different areas of Central Texas, different neighborhoods, and perhaps based on different feed types. By setting out the feeders, the SAILs can attract local birds to their yards for closer observation, practice identification, monitor behavior, and perhaps learn the birds by their sounds as well.
This is the second woodworking project this year for teh SAILs, after making bat houses earlier in the year. The club members are becoming familiar with hand and power tools, their use, and safety protocols, as well as learning basic design and the critical importance of measuring twice, cutting once. While these may be simple projects, they provide opportunities to learn the skills and techniques that are as applicable to larger projects, and even some home maintenance and repair. We are so lucky to have a construction engineer on staff to guide the Pathfinders through these projects.
