The two units camped separately, the Senior Unit backpacking the 2.5 miles to the primitive camping area and the Junior unit setting up at base camp. Over the weekend, the activities varied. Both units spent time hiking, watching birds and visiting the falls. The Junior Unit also took a night hike, and practiced setting up and following trail markers, while the Senior Unit practiced camp cooking and basic land navigation with a compass.
The SAIL Pathfinders held their Spring campout this past weekend at Pedernales Falls State Park. After so many unusual freezing nights here in Central Texas, the weather turned out perfect for the weekend, giving us a chance to truly appreciate the joys of nature, to fellowship together, and to encounter God in the great outdoors. On Sabbath morning, the Senior Unit hiked down out of their hilltop campsite to meet the Junior Unit on the gravel bar in the river for our morning service. The focus, as it has been all year, was water - looking at Peter and his actions in the story of the miraculous catch (John 21) and Jesus washing the disciples’ feet (John 13). Through this we discussed forgiveness, cleansing and the spirit of servitude. As part of this lesson, we washed one another’s feet right there in the river. It is not a glamorous thing to do, particularly with feet dirty from hiking, but it is a very concrete reminder of our need to be servant leaders, to fulfill the Pathfinder Pledge by being servants of God and friends to man.

We held our third annual SAIL Pathfinder Club campout Feb 24-26 at Pedernales Falls State Park. The Junior Unit set up base camp just above one of the nature trails, the Senior Unit backpacked into the wilderness camping area. After a near freezing night (but resplendent with stars) the units met together for Church Sabbath morning, crossing the river to reach the rocky shores for a talk about "blowing the horn," and watched related skits performed by the Pathfinders. After a haystack lunch together, the units split up again. Over the weekend, the Senior Unit focused on orienteering, went on a scavenger hunt for some hidden soup, and took a few cross-country shortcuts. The Junior unit focused on tracks, trails, and trail markers, cast animal tracks, and tried to calculate the width of the river using triangles. It was great having a campfire again, after the past few years of burn bans. The weekend was topped off with a Baptism in the river.
We had a wonderful time out at Pedernales Falls this weekend. The nights were a bit chilly (some may even claim it was downright cold, but I only saw a little frost on the plants), but the days were sunny and warm. We will have a fuller report of the weekend soon, but I did not want to wait to share the best part of the weekend - we ended the campout with a baptism of one of the members, right there in the Pedernales River. Her decision for baptism in a public place was in part a desire to inspire others with her public display of her love for God. We were all truly blessed by the experience, and I know the angels in heaven joined us in rejoicing.
