This weekend, we will be hosting our annual New Pathfinder and Junior Unit overnight. Last year, our honor during the overnight was Origami, with one of the projects being an origami mural of the story of Jonah. This year we will be working on the Bats Honor, and (weather permitting) will head down to the Congress Street bridge to watch the bats emerge. There are 1.5 million bats under the bridge, and if it isn't raining, we will be treated to quite a sight when they emerge in a swirling cloud, heading out for their nightly consumption of between 10,000 and 20,000 pounds of insects [More information on Congress Street Bridge Bats]. On September 23, we will be taking part again in the Lake Travis Underwater Cleanup, in cooperation with Tom’s Dive & Swim. This is the first service project of the year, be sure to wear your field uniform t-shirt, bring closed-toe shoes (sneakers or light hiking boots) for the clean-up, but you may want to wear a swimsuit is the weather is fine, as we may have some time after cleaning up for a bit of a dip in the lake before taking the boat back to lunch. We will meet at Just For Fun Watercraft Rental at the Emerald Point Marina (5973 Hiline Road, Austin, TX 78734) between 7:15-7:30 AM to get ourselves organized and onto the boat. The boat will leave the pier before 8:00AM so do not be late. If you need a ride, please let us know, and we may arrange for one or two pick-up points around Austin. Be sure to have a good breakfast, and bring a water bottle, sunscreen, bug spray and maybe a hat. If you have some garden gloves, bring those too. Lunch will be provided, there will be free lake cleanup t-shirts for all participants, and there is a free raffle (with prizes including anything from scuba lessons to restaurant coupons to paint). The event ends around 1:30.
Finally, we have our next club meeting Wednesday, September 19 at 6:30PM. Also do not forget that September 29 is the special Youth Sabbath, with guest speaker Conference president Carlos Craig, as well as Adventurer and Pathfinder Induction. Plan to spend the day.
