Let's Plant Some Trees!

“Today we’re going to be planting in an area that was totally destroyed by fire and where nothing has grown back.” How excited we all were! In this, our fourth year of volunteering at Bastrop State Park to be a part of the reforestation project, we were going to actually be planting in one of the areas where nothing was growing back. We would get to be a part of bringing life back to this part of what had been a beautiful stand of stately Loblolly Pines following the devastating fires of Labor Day 2011.

This was a special day in another way too. This year the SAIL Pathfinders were joined by Pathfinders from the Austin Knights and Bastrop Peace Warriors Pathfinder clubs. For the first time we were allowed to choose the main group of volunteers to participate in the planting opportunity for a specific date. The weather did not disappoint the SAIL Pathfinders as the day started out with a fine mist falling. Eagerly 30 Pathfinders fell in at attention to be given instructions for the day. This was a bit disconcerting for our Park Ranger as he was more used to pulling kids off the monkey bars than addressing a large group of young people attentively awaiting his instructions! He told them that they could relax and was amazed that they would only do so if given the command from a director. Even when the Pathfinders were given the command, “At Ease”, he was in awe. This led to an opportunity for the SAIL Pathfinder Director to share who Pathfinders are as the group moved up the hill to the planting area.

In a very short time the 50 members of our group, along with a few people from another group, had planted all the trees the parks department had allotted for this area. In about 2 hours time we had planted 1302 trees, the second highest number of trees planted in a day this year!

How proud I was of our Pathfinders when we were all finished and our park ranger stated that our group was welcome to come back next year as we had done a fine job and he had been happy to work with us. Thank you, Pathfinders, for being a good witness and for giving of yourselves to your community today!

Bridge: A structure spanning and providing passage over a gap or barrier

“Bridges” was the theme of the senior citizen appreciation brunch hosted by the SAIL Pathfinders in honor of the senior members of the Austin South Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Festive tables and yummy smells welcomed all guests as they entered the fellowship hall the morning of November 9, 2014. In restaurant-style, Pathfinders filled food orders and served the guests, using etiquette learned from the Christian Grooming and Manners Honor. Then they dispersed among the tables to visit. At each place setting was a question for the Pathfinders to ask their guests. These questions included things such as “Where were you when people first landed on the moon?” and “What kind of vehicle did your parents drive when you were my age?” The goal was to help “bridge the gap” between generations, helping to give the Pathfinders a glimpse into life before they were born. Many stories were shared and the guests enjoyed being led down memory lane, as well as having the attention of the young people with whom they shared their stories.

Following the delicious meal, guests were ushered into the youth room “theater” for a live taping of the “Ed Sullivan” show. Pathfinders portrayed many of the characters who were popular in the 1960’s, including Barbara Streisand, Kermit & Miss Piggy, Dr. Who, James Bond, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and many more.

A special thank you to John and Sunny Stradling for the wonderful food, and to Hanna Klein for writing and directing our show!

All guests left that day feeling honored. Pathfinders were delighted to have served their guests and to have brought joy to their hearts. This “Bridge” successfully brought two generations over a chasm of time to unite for one wonderful moment.

Can Collecting 2014

Trick or treating? No, not this group of young people! They were thinking of their neighbors who would be hungry at Thanksgiving. Pathfinders eagerly went from house to house the evening of October 29 looking for the bags which had been left on doorsteps days earlier. These were filled with non-perishable food items to be used to help hungry families have a Thanksgiving dinner. When all was collected and counted everyone was very happy to learn that there were almost 200 food items! A big thank you to all who donated!

And it seems that someone who donated heartily approved of their efforts because this note was left on one of the bags: “We think what you are doing is ‘Awesome’!” This put a smile on everyone’s faces and a wish in their hearts to do even more next year.
