Spring Overnight, Archery and... Rain

The SAIL Pathfinders held their Spring overnight campout over the weekend, and, as usual, it rained. But when did a little water from the sky (or mud from the field) keep the SAILs from enjoying time in nature? We saw hummingbirds, a flock of pelicans migrating north, bluebirds, admired the spring wildflowers, heard owls in the night, and were serenaded by the coyotes, as well as the neighbor’s donkey.

Sabbath afternoon was beautiful out at the ranch, cool, a little overcast, but a soothing backdrop for worship around the (empty) fire-pit. We talked of the Woman at the Well, from John chapter 4, and the lessons the story provides for our own interactions with others. The Pastor joined the SAILs for songs and devotions, and for a dinner of pizza-tacos. After dark, it was capture the flag, beneath a cloud-covered sky that briefly split to reveal a dazzling moon and stars. The rain didn’t start until after lights out, and was a gentle patter on the tents easing the Pathfinders to sleep.

In the morning, after the birds sang the Pathfinders awake,  it was bread on a stick over a charcoal “campfire,” and potatoes and eggs - all to the background noise of the distant rumble of approaching thunder. With only a few dishes left to wash, the rain arrived in full force, sending the SAILs scurrying to their tents, extinguishing the charcoals, and finishing the job of dish-washing. The three-quarters of an inch of rain left the ground a bit sticky and the air rather misty, but after some hot chocolate and herbal tea, it was off to the archery field for several rounds of target shooting, where even the staff and Pastor got a chance to take aim.

Overall, rain or no, it was a wonderful weekend of fellowship, fun and time together surrounded by God’s creation.
